The "Pac Mate" developed by Freedom Scientific is a Notetaker, which bases on "Microsoft Pocket PC 2003" an the operating system "Windows CE". With screen reader JAWS® for "Pocket PC 2003" the appliance and feedback information in speech output and braille output is possible. General Pocket PC applications such as Word, Excel and Outlook should be able to be used in the full extent.
The "Pac Mate" is offered in two types: With braille keyboard and with standard QWERTY keyboard. Designs with internal braille keyboard are also available. The "Pac Mate" comes with numerous ports: An USB- and a serial port e.g. allow the use of "Pac Mate" as an external speech output.
The also available PC card slot takes a modem or network card. The storage of the device may be switchend or enlarged by compact flash card slot. By infrared port the "Pac Mate" agrees with other devices such like computer oder cell phone. Particularly interesting for fans of cell phoning may be the Pocket PC mobile extension by Nokia. As card it can be operated in the PC card slot of the "Pac Mate". Furthermore, there is a FS-Reader (FS = Freedomscientific)available for reading out DAISY books. So the device is completely usable for the blind in all its functions.
Pronto! is a new notetaker from BAUM with internal 18- cells braille display. Several operation possibilities BAUM names here: word processing, adress data service, date definition, pocket calculator, measurement of temperature and air-pressure and a compass. Also available is an internal mp3 player. In spite of the internal braille display the weight of Pronto! is only approx. 450 gram.
In autumn 2003 the dutch company ALVA BV launched a german version of MPO "Mobile Phone & Organizer". As manufacturer's information, this notetaker offers all important features such as word processing, pocket calculator, date definition, alarm bell and the announcement of date and time. Along with a 20-cells braille display there is integrated a triband GSM module of siemens company. INCOBS staffer could persuade themselves of unproblematic sending and picking up sms without long instructions. The user also can hold a telephone coversation. The company ALVA BV is not only adressing this device to computer users as also to users, which are able to read braille and need a device which is simple to operate and usable for daily duties. The device weight is about 680 g.
The Handy Tech Elektronik GmbH company distributes a 20 cell braille display, the braillino. By docking station the braillino can be connected with Nokia Communicator 9210i. Braillino can be used as notetaker. The Communicator is delivered with software Talks&Braille, a screen reader for its operating system. Braillino shall offer everything you expect from a well designed organiser:

The F. H. Papenmeier company offers the "ELBA". This device is working on Linux base, and is optionally available with braille display or ASCII-input keyboard. There is a 32 cell braille display and an internal speech output. Along to the mentioned standard functions the ELBA is delivered with a E-Mail-Client and the internet browser Lynx.
Sigma is upgrade- and extendable and provided with a 8 dot braille display and an extendable notetaker. It comes with a reading out function with speech output, a word processing with short cut entry and orthography correction, address administration, data base program, greenwich mean time and date definition. Its PC-oriented menue structure shall assure a simple operation. The SIGMA is accompanied by an online resource and an electronic guide. The notetaker shall be extended about some features such as e-Mail function, sms-sending and receiving facility projected. Optionally, a bar code scanner and product data base is available already.
Sigma offers USB and serial ports, it shall be extended by Bluetooth, W-LAN and a braille output module.
The operating accu time is quoted by the manufacturer with about one week, in energy saving modus for about ten days. the storage capacity is extendable from 64 MB up to 4 GB. With a weight of about 480 g. the SIGMA is one of the lighter notetakers.
